HX5, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, is seeking a Materials Science Engineer to perform the following:
Manufacturing of materials and samples: Process powders, prepare coatings and test coated samples, maintain supply of substrate material, substrates bond coated, maintain supply of chemicals and powders, cut and grind samples to size for testing and Metallographic sample preparation (sectioning, mounting, grinding, and polishing of samples for analysis).
Operate: SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), Optical Microscopes, Differential Thermal Analyzer, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Particle Size Analyzer, Dilatometer, 4 Point Probe Resistivity System, Network Analyzer, Surface and Pore Size Analyzer, Thermal Conductivity Test System, Universal Test Frame 3 and 4 point bend and Compression Testing and Environmental Chambers, Industrial Saws, Surface Grinder, Balances, Drill Press, Roller Mills, Sieve Shaker, and Ball Mills.
Conduct testing and initial analysis of data to determine if test was successful, construct test systems, utilize MATLAB to control test systems and to analyze data.
Perform laboratory management duties as assigned.
Travel in accord with requirements for attendance at technical meetings, technology transfer, presentation of research, and in acquiring training or course work useful for enhancing capabilities.
Required Skills:
Electron Optics (Scanning Electron Microscope) and Optical Microscopy.
Manufacturing and Testing of Materials and Operating Laboratory Equipment.
Laboratory Management: Maintain calibration records, coordinate equipment and facility repairs, etc.
Ability to lift 30 pounds.
Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods.
Other Desired Skills:
Working knowledge of programming using MATLAB.
Laboratory safety training including chemical handling, storage and disposal.
Capable of working independently or as part of a team.
Education and Experience:
Materials Science or Materials Engineering degree from an ABET accredited institution with one of the following combinations of education and experience:
Bachelor's degree with 5 to 10 years of experience
Master’s degree with 3 to 6 years of experience
Must be a US citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Position requires a Top-Secret clearance; this process will begin on the date of hire.
